Here is the schedule for the first season of the Northern Colorado Disc Golf League. These dates should be firm, with the possible exception of the Brighton date. If they do not move their tag night back to Thursdays by the end of June we will make a move to another course.

May 1, Tuesday 5:00 pm Interlocken
May 6, Sunday 9:00 am ** Jellystone
May 15, Tuesday 5:00 pm Expo
May 23, Wednesday 5:00 pm Lighthouse
May 28, Monday ** Beaver Ranch at Conifer
(Memorial weekend)
June 4, Monday 5:00 pm Johnny Roberts
June 15, Friday 5:30pm Westy
June 20, Wednesday 5:30 pm Badlands
June 27, Wednesday 5:30 pm Badlands

There will be a $1 fee per person per week. $0.50 comes back to the league for year end prizes, $0.50 goes to the PDGA for bookkeeping and generating round ratings. You are not required to be a PDGA member; if you are, your ratings will be available soon, if not, those ratings will be kept for the duration of the season and if you would like to take advantage of PDGA membership discounts then those ratings would become active.

The two starred weeks, Jellystone and Conifer, will involve small extra fees. The Jellystone event will be tied to their Jellystone Classic Series. We will spend the day that Sunday as part of their second event. Details to follow on that. The Beaver Ranch course does come with a $3 per person fee. We will be playing one round of sanctioned league singles in the morning and then follow with unsanctioned doubles that will count towards league scores in the afternoon.

We have 9 singles and 2 doubles rounds for a total of 11. We will count the best 7 scores towards your league total, similar to Winter Warriors. As you probably noticed, each of these with the two exceptions above, coincide with a scheduled tag match. You can play tags, play leagues, or play both each week. I have put the start times at 5 for each week, this will allow us time to get names and PDGA numbers etc before each event and also allow time for some rules clinics, some pro clinics, and some warm up. As the season progresses, those times may move to 5:30 so stay tuned.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here and we will do our best to answer them quickly.

Thank you

2 things: 1) Brighton should be back on Thursdays by than. 2) Will the tagmasters be running this league night when it's at their course or how is that working out exactly?

Good to hear about the move back, and no, Rob, Ian, Will or Dave(me) will be at each event to do administration/td duties. Let us know how we can help you. Still interested in rights to the name, Mile Hyzers, for the league.

Oh yeah, forget about that. Have it, I used for a fantasy football team name years ago. The rights are all yours

I would like to commend the team who decided to create a sanctioned disc golf league for our area. Based on the first night, I’d call it a tremendous success. Sixteen players signed up for the league’s opening day. Some others played tags only. Everything seemed to go smoothly with no apparent glitches or rules violations. There was one episode of mild profanity, but I quickly recanted because my shot was not as bad as I had originally thought. Later that night, I also apologized to my mother.

Rating the sanctioned league rounds does raise the stakes for some of us, but for me what really raises the stakes is that the competition is ongoing, week-to-week. This is part of what makes Winter Warriors one of my favorite events every year. Also like Winter Warriors, the league will take us to a variety of different courses during the season. Winter Warriors introduced me to Oxbow last year, and this weekend the league is traveling to Jellystone, a new course for me and one I’ve been intending to play for months.

My hunch is that having a sanctioned league will only have a positive effect on growing our sport. I like that we have yet another format and another way to compete in disc golf. Some people say that less is more; and while that might be true at strip clubs, when it comes to disc golf, I say MORE is more. I like that this year we have more choices than ever.

I like that we have Winter Warriors. It’s a highlight of my winter weekends, and it gives me a chance to show off my most advanced disc golf skill: picking talented doubles partners.

I like that we have match play grudge matches. During the recent bout, despite a hopelessly uneven scoring system, the proud and mighty Math Bears still managed to secure a top-four finish, just a whisker away from the bronze medal. Kudos to Team Neapolitan for providing positive leadership founded in diversity.

I like that we can play organized tags at any number of courses most nights of the week. I don’t get there often, but I like tags at Lighthouse, an otherwise desolate parcel of land, brought to life by a vibrant community of disc golfers led by the gregarious Larry McCourt, a man so secure in his masculinity that he was throwing drivers weighing less than 150 grams long before it became Blizzard chic to do so. Thanks to all the tag masters for your dedication.

I like that Kyle created the Phenix one-day series, offering me more ways to throw out-of-bounds than I ever thought possible. For his next tournament, he’s introducing the “air island.” To be in bounds your disc has to stay in the air; if it lands anywhere on the ground, it’s OB. These are fun, challenging, unsanctioned events, and I plan to make it to as many of them as I can.

I like that we have sanctioned tournaments in our area every month, and I appreciate the long hours put in by our many TDs.

I like that CHU is just one of the many new courses going in around here. Props to the work crew at CHU who apparently laid enough concrete tee pads to provide a foundation for a new house--a long, skinny house. I want to play all the new courses, and I am grateful for the visionaries willing to wade through the details and see these projects through to completion.

I like that we have other active disc golf clubs nearby, and that they maintain and make available to us many high-quality courses and events just a short drive away.

I like that we have longstanding traditions of doubles at Johnny and Badlands.

I like that we have The Chad and the wacky tournaments he creates. Thanks for reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously. Everyone should lighten up and play the Rodnoc. Seriously.

When I consider all these diverse events, what they have in common is our wealth of excellent leadership, from the old guard, like Bird, Wright and Ross, who have been making things happen for decades, to the new blood, putting their spin on things. Thanks to all of our leaders for giving so much of your time and for giving us so many choices.

Am I missing anything? If so, I probably like that, too.

Well said! However, I don't like that the MH forum apparently has no limit to how many words Keener can type in one post.

Mitch, I'm glad I haven't reached my limit yet because I realize I forgot what is arguably the most extreme choice: Deer Mountain. Thanks to Jim for offering a course that is essentially carved into a series of cliffs. If I walk away unscathed, I have won.

Keener's verbosity is only matched by his generosity, and as Sister Mary Louise used to tell his mother, "I'd put him in a class by himself."

Did Keener ask his mother forgiveness for the use of profanity, for frequenting strip clubs, or the daily double? I experienced firsthand his dislike of a non-profane 60s term still used to this day.

I got scores updated and they seem to be right. I have never uploaded tourney results before but I think with tons of excel help from Will Orgain (thank you thank you thank you) I got it done right. If anyone notices scores that are incorrect please let me know and we'll get it fixed.

My youngest son got concussed at school that day so I couldn't make it. Thanks again to Dave, Ian, and Will for picking up the slack, much appreciated. It seems to have gone very smoothly and the comments have been very positive so far.

This Sunday is going to be very fun at Jellystone. Dave will be giving us an update today or tomorrow on all the activities going on that day. I do know once again, following the sanctioned league theme of OPTIONS, you will be able to play just the Jellystone course for fun (normal pay to play entry will apply, I believe $5) or you can play the sanctioned league for $1 more, or they are having a cash buy in-cash payout option for additional fees as well. It will be a great chance for Am players to win some money! So, after playing McCook or Deer Mtn on Saturday, come out and support a great course at Jellystone, try out the sanctioned leagues while you're there, and maybe win some cash.

See you this weekend,
Rob Liebman

If you haven't checked out the league section of the PDGA, it is a sub heading under PDGA Tour. Then click schedule on the right hand side, and scroll down to May1st. I'm not sure why the little trophy isn't showing up but scores are there, with preview ratings.

Or you can click here  http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/ ... 1331914847
