It’s nearly tournament time again.
Time for another rules quiz.

1 – Larry and The Chad are playing Edora hole 10. They each throw identical looking red Wraiths from the tee. The drives land near each other. The Chad walks up to the Wraith he believes is his and quickly throws his upshot under the basket. Larry isn’t so sure The Chad threw the right disc so he flips the remaining disc over to check the name, sees it is his, puts the disc back and takes a stance. Since he is near a tree he uses his whole 30 cm behind the disc and tosses his upshot in for a deuce. The Chad makes his par before Larry removes his disc.

Did either player break any rules?

2 – Hole 6 at Ft Morgan Optimist. This is the tourney’s last hole. Kathy, Paige, Kelsey, and Peggy are all tied. Kathy, Paige and Kelsey all drive and are 40 feet away. Peggy has been throwing far all day so she asks Kathy to run down and be a spotter for her in case she over throws the hole and goes in the water. Sure enough, Peggy rips a drive that nearly aces, flies past the basket, and just before it flies into the water Kathy, knowing it is Peggy’s favorite disc, reaches out and prevents it from going OB. Peggy thanks Kathy, marks her lie a meter from the water and drains the putt. Kathy, Paige, and Kelsey all miss and all take 3s.

What happens next?

3 – Hole 6 at the Mountain Valley course has a double mando you need to throw between. Past the mandos, the fairway makes a strong dogleg to the right. JEB and Wes each throw rollers. Each of their rollers went between the 2 mandos but then rolled in a big circle around one of the mandos and ended up back behind the mando line.. JEB was away and tried a big turnover back through the mandos turning towards the basket. His next throw was close and he made the putt for a 4. Wes decided he would just throw his 2nd shot directly towards the basket, not through the mandos. He parks it and makes his drop in for a three.

Were any rules broken ? By who? What rule?

Question number 1
After each throw, the thrown disc must be left where it came to rest until the lie is established by the placing of a marker. A player may instead choose, without touching or repositioning the thrown disc, to use the thrown disc as the marker. Larry did not do that, he touched the disc to turn it over(what a loser).

The other questions didn't have Larry in them so I don't care.

Woo Hoo, Rules!

1. Larry should not have looked at his disc without marking his lie, but if he was thinking clearly he would have just asked his playing partner to see the disc he picked up to make sure that it was his. Then at the very least he would be in the clear and he might have been able to gain a stroke rather than loosing it.

2. Wouldn't they just add up their scores and make sure to turn in their scorecard within the set timeframe? I mean, you might shake hands and do all the pleasentries making sure that the score taken on that last hole included the OB penelty. I am sure there is some rule for intereferance but I am pretty sure in this instance, speed of play could be called to prevent the long search and attempt to somehow get the disc out of the water.

3. I can't remember the question but I think my answer was going to be that nothign was done wrong. So, I'll go with that.

1. You do not get 30 cm from the back of the disc, you get 30 cm from the front of the disc, although most people would not call this. That is the way I understand the rule, don't have my book with me so I can't check it. Sorry Larry.

2. Tough call. Peggy could call interference and take the 2 but that would be pretty low since Kathy just saved her disc. If in this situation, ask the thrower, before they throw, if they want you to stop the disc if it is obviously going out. I would think the group would give Peggy the 3.

3. No problem, once you make the mando you do not have to do it again.

1. I thought you could take 30cm from the back of either the mini or disc, hence the advantage of not marking your lie if you need the extra distance of the disc. So I don't think anything was done wrong. Of course flipping it and putting it back could have consequences but since they are among friends and there is no intent of cheating, I say play on. As for Thechad holing out before Larry clears, speed of play because we know Larry is old (How did they get on the same card?) and is going to take a while to get to the basket after his big birdie celebration.

2. What happens next? Playoff-it's still a 4 way tie. Due to the way I was taught about sportsmanship (and speed of play), no harm no foul. Again, no intent of cheating.

3. No rules were broken. Once the mando is cleared they don't have to go through again.

That's my thoughts off the top of my head. Obviously there are rules that go along with 1 and 2 that could be called but intent supersedes the rules in my opinion. (Now let's hear how Larry and Kathy should be stroked from which rule by the rules nazis :P )

1. They threw Wraiths on hole 10 at Edora. That should be a rules violation. Otherwise, no. I'm trying to find the citation on verifying the mark... but here's the large solid obstacle rule in the mean time.

803.04 Stance, Subsequent to Teeing Off
E. If a large solid obstacle prevents a player from taking a legal stance within 30 centimeters
directly behind the marker disc, the player shall take his or her stance immediately
behind that obstacle on the line of play. The player must comply with all the provisions of
803.04 A other than being within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc.

Nevermind, I was thinking of hole 11 at Edora... they're fine to throw wraiths on 10 :D

I can't find it immediately and have already spent too much time looking but somewhere in the rules it states something like "a disc at rest may be moved only to verify the mark and must be placed as close as possible back in its original position"

Someone with less immediate work responsibility can have fun reading the rules to find it for me.

1. poor larry, moving his disc before marking his lie...and taking 30cm from the back of his disc and not 30cm from the back of his lie. nice work the chad.
2. kathy made the mistake, this exact issue is being discussed on the pdga rules forum. she should have waited until the disc was in the water and OB, then quickly retrieved it and received her hug from peggy.
3. no rules were broken, you only have to make it past the mando plane once
